Ma. Cecilia Sanchez, Ph.D.
Ma. Cecilia Sanchez, Ph.D., is Independent Researcher CONICET/Adjunct Professor UNC and director of the Laboratory of Neovascularization and Retinal Degeneration at CIBICI-CONICET Institute. Her research focuses on the study of the interactions between blood vessels and the non-vascular components of the retina such as glial cells and neurons and how they change in neovascular and degenerative diseases like retinopathy of prematurity and diabetic retinopathy. The focus is on the study of antiangiogenic and neuroprotective factors with the goal of developing therapies to stop these complications in patients with retinopathies.
Dr. Sanchez completed her Ph.D. in Chemical Sciences at National University of Cordoba in Argentina in 2000. She is Member of the Association for Research in Vision & Ophthalmology, since 2004, and she participates in the working group on advocacy and public outreach (2013-today). She has collaborated with several researchers from Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University-Baltimore; Institut des Neurosciences Cellulaires et Intégratives- Strasbourg; and Departments of Oncology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics, McGill University-Montreal.
